Universal TB Testing of School-Aged Children Not Required -- Targeted Testing Recommended

The Los Angeles Department of Public Health has released an article concerning a new policy that does not require universal testing for tuberculosis (TB) for children entering Kindergarten-12th Grade in Los Angeles County, starting July 1, 2012. Under the new policy, TB tests will be replaced by TB screenings and targeting testing for children that are at risk. Risk factors have been determined by the American Academy of Pediatrics, which include:
  •  Birth in a region of the world with endemic TB
  • Travel to high-incidence country for a long period
  • Exposure to persons with confirmed or suspected TB disease
  • Close contact to someone who has had a positive test for TB infection

The policy will not affect the State's current requirements for preschool children, teachers, or volunteers, as these requirements are not subject to local discretionary changes.
