AAP California Chapter 2

Pediatric E-News
May 2011

Dear Dr.

Spring break is over and graduation season has started, but Chapter 2 and the LA County Health Department (LADPH) are already thinking about the 2011-2012 school year.

Beginning July 1, 2011, AB354 officially goes into effect, which means that many of your adolescent patients will need to provide proof of having received vaccination for pertussis. The law states that students may be excluded from attending school if they have not received the required pertussis booster.

We have included in this newsletter a survey from LADPH that will help us all better prepare for the challenges ahead. Additionally, we have included some new resources to help you, your patients' parents and community partners better understand the implementation for AB354.

Chapter 2 is also preparing for a summer of change as we embark on a new strategic planning process. We are eager to include our members in the process and will be distributing a survey in July for your input on what the Chapter should consider as we move into the future.

Also - don't miss out on the upcoming townhall and educational meetings taking place in June! We hope to see you soon!

Pertussis Vaccination: Preparing for Implementation

ALF As you may know, California State Legislation passed AB354 last year, which requires adolescents to be vaccinated against pertussis before entering school in the 2011-2012 school year. AAP leaders have been working with state officials and education leaders to prepare for the rush of parents coming to schools and physician offices this summer to receive vaccinations or proof of vaccination.

Help us help you prepare for AB354 implementation - Complete our survey here

About the Survey:

If you are a physician who provides outpatient care to adolescent patients, please take a few moments to complete this brief survey from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. Survey results will help Public Health understand the steps you are taking to vaccinate your adolescent patients and help the Department refine its resources to better support your efforts.
