AAP California Chapter 2

Pediatric E-News

November 2010

Dear Dr. Green

With the election finally over, we now can gear up for flu season.  I think we are all still waiting for the explanation of why the pharmacies get their flu vaccine in abundance and our offices get small batches sent out over months...

Read below for some of the highlights of our Walk to School Campaign held last month.  It was a great collaborative effort.  Kudos to our committee members: Cori Cross, Tracy Zaslow, Mary Doyle and Marissa Green.

It is not too soon to think about taking a break from the mid-winter blahs and join us in Palm Springs in February for our annual CME program, Clinical Pediatrics.

Membership in the AAP is a great way to connect with colleagues.  National AAP is sponsoring a membership drive this month.  Any member who recruits a new member gets a $15 Starbucks card, and the Chapter can win up to $1000.  Please consider asking your friends if they are members, and if not, send them our way to learn about the advantages of belonging to the premiere organization advocating for children and the people who care for them. Click here for more information about the campaign and materials to help.

Looking for your next CME meeting? Join us in Palm Springs this February!

Each year, AAP-CA2 hosts Clinical Pediatrics Palm Springs, CA. This continuing medical education (CME) meeting is designed to provide California - Chapter 2 members an informative and interesting CME option close to home. February 18 - 20th we will be hosting the 2011 meeting at the Hilton Palm Springs. This year, faculty from across the country will present new information on infectious disease, endocrinology, dermatology, behavioral and adolescent medicine and immunology. Click here for the full program.

The meeting is structured so that participants attend learning sessions in the morning with the option of interactive, luncheon workshops to get more hands-on experience. The afternoons are left open so attendees and their guests can take advantage of all Palm Springs has to offer during the President's day weekend. Together we walked for WALKTOBER!

In October, AAP-CA2 worked with several Los Angeles community partners, including Councilwoman Jan Perry, Los Angeles Unified School District, LAPD and the LA Department of Transportation to promote International Walk to School Month. The 2010 program, deemed 'Walktober' took on a new life as more community organizations became involved and schools on the south side of Los Angeles hosted walk-to-school programs throughout the month.

Normandie Elementary School - Walktober 2010

The programs were designed to encourage local leaders, families and children to practice safety while walking to school and increase activity to combat the growing obesity epidemic. AAP-CA2 members from the Walk to School committee participated in four events where presentations were given to parents and students about the importance of safe walking and obesity prevention tools. Additionally, the committee prepared materials for pediatric offices and schools, which are still available on our web site at

The program will continue throughout the 2010-2011 school year, with more schools planning to participate in the months to come. The Walk to School committee is dedicated to keeping the momentum alive and will continue to work with LAUSD, LA DOT and interested schools to help implement walk to school programs and other obesity prevention education as needed.

If you are interested in participating in this program, or initiating a similar program in your county or city, please contact us at for information on how to get started.
