Colleen Kraft, MD, MBA, FAAP

8:10 AM - 8:50 AM - Caring for Children in Immigrant Families

Speaker Bio: Colleen A. Kraft, MD, MBA, FAAP is Professor of Pediatrics at the Keck School of Medicine/University of Southern California and attending physician at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). She co-directs IMPACT (Improving Medicine, Pediatricians and Communities Together), which is the pediatric residency advocacy track at CHLA.

Dr. Kraft is the 2018 Past President of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the 2024 AAP Media Visiting Professor. She received her undergraduate degree at Virginia Tech, her M.D. from Virginia Commonwealth University, and her MBA from the University of Cincinnati. She completed her residency in Pediatrics at Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Kraft is known for her work in integrating care for children with developmental disabilities and behavioral health conditions into primary care pediatrics.

Edward S. Curry, MD, FAAP

8:50 AM - 9:30 AM - How to Diagnose and Treat ADHD in a Busy Practice

Speaker Bio: Dr. Edward Curry has been a pediatrician with the Southern California Permanente Medical Group (SCMPG) at Kaiser Fontana Medical Center for the past 40 years. He specializes in general pediatrics, autism, learning, and behaviors. Dr. Curry currently serves as the Chairperson for the AAP Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Clinical Practice Guideline Subcommittee. He has also been involved in various leadership roles and committees within the AAP, including serving as the past president of California Chapter 2, Chairperson of the National Nominating Committee, and a Member of the Bright Futures Steering Committee.

  • Develop an efficient office workflow for ADHD evaluation and treatment
  • Increase confidence in diagnosing and treating ADHD and its co-morbidities
  • Access resources necessary to assist in providing outstanding ADHD care to children

Alaina Vidmar, MD, FAAP

Speaker Bio: Dr. Alaina Vidmar is an Associate Professor in Pediatric Endocrinology, a Board-Certified Pediatric Obesity Medicine Specialist, and the Director of Obesity Medicine and Bariatric Surgery at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Dr. Vidmar received her medical degree and completed her residency in Pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. She completed her fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

  • Review epidemiology of pediatric obesity
  • Describe comprehensive obesity treatment
  • Highlight obesity pharmacotherapy use in youth and identify pediatric criteria for bariatric surgery

Sharief Taraman, MD, FAAP

10:50 AM - 11:30 AM - Keynote Lecture: Advances of AI in Healthcare & Pediatrics

Speaker Bio: Dr. Sharief Taraman is dual board-certified in Child Neurology and Clinical Informatics. He formerly served as Division Chief of Pediatric Neurology at CHOC and UC Irvine, where he remains an active staff member. Dr. Taraman holds academic positions at UC Irvine, UC Riverside, and Chapman University. Actively involved in the medical community, he has leadership roles in the American Academy of Pediatrics and serves on various advisory boards. Dr. Taraman is globally recognized as an innovator in pediatrics, contributing to the development of FDA-designated breakthrough devices and receiving prestigious grants.

  • Define how AI is being used in healthcare & the benefits with specific examples within pediatrics
  • Have a framework to evaluate accuracy/utility of AI in healthcare
  • Identify risks of AI in healthcare including privacy, regulatory, ethical, & potential biases

11:30 AM - 12:10 PM - Ped's RAP Podcast Live Recording: “But I Did My Own Research”: Combatting Medical Misinformation

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the social landscape by which parents are exposed to medical misinformation
  • Devise strategies to combat medical misinformation in the clinical practice of pediatrics
  • State how pediatricians can improve access to scientific based, reliable medical information for families, and discuss the ethical obligations pediatricians have when it comes to caring for children of parents who are acting on medical misinformation that could have negative consequences for a child’s health

Felice Adler, MD, FAAP

1:30 PM - 2:10 PM - S. Michael Marcy, MD, FAAP Memorial Lecture:

Tiny Patients, Big Responsibility: Cultivating Antimicrobial Stewardship in Pediatric Care

This year’s lecture topic will feature Dr. Felice Adler speaking on Antimicrobial Stewardship. Dr. Adler is a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and practices Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, California where she is also the Director of Pediatric Antimicrobial Stewardship.

Dr. Adler currently serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society and an Assistant Editor for the Journal of Clinical Tuberculosis and Other Mycobacterial Diseases. She has a particular interest in antimicrobial stewardship, neonatal infections, tuberculosis and other mycobacterial infections.

Learning Objectives

  • Define the core principles of antimicrobial stewardship and explain its importance in outpatient pediatric practice for improving patient outcomes and combating antimicrobial resistance
  • Develop evidence-based prescribing strategies for common pediatric infections that minimize unnecessary antibiotic use while ensuring appropriate treatment of bacterial infections

In 2014, the medical community lost a brilliant professional, and a friend. Dr. S. Michael Marcy was a member of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. A Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at both USC and UCLA, Dr. Marcy had the distinction of having served actively in the education and research activities at the 4 major teaching programs in Los Angeles. In his honor, and now in its tenth year, AAP-CA2 established the S. Michael Marcy Memorial Lecture.

           

Gina Solomon, MD, MPH

2:10 PM - 2:50 PM - Post-Fire Threats to Children's Health

Speaker Bio: Gina Solomon, M.D., M.P.H. is the Chief of the Division of Occupational, Environmental and Climate Medicine at UCSF. In this role she oversees clinical occupational and environmental health at UCSF Health, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and the San Francisco Veterans Administration Medical Center. She is also the Program Director of the UCSF Occupational and Environmental Medicine Residency program, teaches medical and nursing students, and leads the research efforts in the Division.

Before coming to UCSF, Dr. Solomon founded and directed the Achieving Resilient Communities program at the Public Health Institute, where she worked from 2018-2023. From 2012-2018 she was appointed by Governor Brown as the Deputy Secretary for Science and Health at the California Environmental Protection Agency. Dr. Solomon previously served as the director of the occupational and environmental medicine residency program at UCSF from 2008-2012, the associate director of the UCSF Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit from 2003-2009, and as a Senior Scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) from 1996-2012.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the potential health effects of at least three contaminants found in Los Angeles fire zones
  • Provide actionable guidance to parents in at least two common post-fire scenarios

Learning Objectives

Increasing Firearm Screening in Resident Pediatric Well-Child Checks Learning Objectives:
-Increase the rate of firearm screening in pediatric resident WCCs at two clinics to 80% over an 8-month period.
-Explore associations between demographics and firearm prevalence in our clinic population

Primary and Dental Care Utilization Among Children with Neurodevelopmental Disorders in Federally Qualified Health Centers Learning Objectives:
-Explore whether children with NDDs receiving care at an FQHC, defined as having at least one visit, have higher odds of well-child care visits (WCC) and dental visits compared to those receiving care in non-FQHC settings
-Identify that children with NDDs who receive their primary care at FQHCs have significantly higher primary and dental care utilization than those in non-FQHC settings. These findings underscore the critical role of FQHCs in improving healthcare access for children with developmental conditions
