Come learn about the Pediatric Approach to Trauma, Treatment, and Resilience (PATTeR) Clinic Staff Training and how you can bring this training back to your clinical community. This Train-the-Trainer session will introduce you to the Pediatric Approach to Trauma, Treatment, and Resilience (PATTeR) Clinic Staff Training. This interactive training will cover core TIC principles, facilitation strategies, and practical tools to train staff effectively. The program emphasizes building trauma-informed clinical teams, supporting team well-being, and fostering relational health. Participants will gain the confidence to lead the PATTeR training, adapt content to their setting, and champion TIC practices within their organizations. Best of all, this event will be taking place at the same venue and on the same day as the 36th Annual Advances In Pediatrics Symposium! Please note, registration is free.

Christine Thang, MD, FAAP
1:20 PM - 2:00 PM - Session 1: Foundations of Trauma-Informed (Relational) Care
Speaker Bio: Dr. Thang is a Health Sciences Assistant Clinical Professor in the UCLA Department of Pediatrics and Associate Program Director for the UCLA Pediatrics Residency Training Program. She directs the mental health rotation and co-facilitates the PATTeR training course for pediatric residents and outpatient and inpatient clinical teams.
Learning Objectives
- Define trauma and describe its impact on physical, emotional, and relational health.
- Understand how the stress response system and trauma can affect behavior and communication in clinical settings.
- Recognize the importance of relational health and a trauma-informed approach in pediatric care.
Moira Szilagyi, MD, PhD, FAAP
2:00 PM - 2:40 PM - Session 2: Promoting Resilience and Relational Health Skills
Speaker Bio: Dr. Szilagyi is a Health Sciences Clinical Professor in the UCLA Department of Pediatrics and Chief of the UCLA Division of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics. She is a past president of the American Academy of Pediatrics and was PI on several national education and training grants including the development of the original PATTeR project initially funded by SAMHSA. She is a renowned expert in trauma-informed care.
Learning Objectives
- Define resilience and identify factors that support resilience in children, families, and staff.
- Apply relational health skills to promote connection, safety, and trust during clinical interactions.
- Practice trauma-informed engagement strategies to improve patient and family communication.

Samantha Kucaj, PsyD
3:00 PM - 3:40 PM - Session 3: Navigating Healthcare Stressors & Supporting Teams
Speaker Bio: Dr. Kucaj is a trauma-trained clinical psychologist specializing in developmental-behavioral pediatrics and supporting families navigating neonatal intensive care stays. She co-facilitates the PATTeR training course for pediatric residents and outpatient and inpatient clinical teams.
Learning Objectives
- Identify common sources of stress and trauma for healthcare professionals and families in the clinical setting.
- Describe how trauma-informed systems and team-based approaches support staff well-being and patient care.
- Explore strategies for building and sustaining trauma-informed clinical teams.
